Opening hours, tickets, getting there and access — everything you need to plan a visit to Bratislava Castle.
The museum is closed every Tuesday. This is the single most common way to waste a trip up the hill. The castle grounds and gardens stay open on Tuesdays — only the museum inside is shut.
Choose your ticket
There is no guided-tour queue to join and no timed entry — you buy admission for a date and walk in when you like. The choice is simply how much of the castle you want to see.
The main route through the castle: the Celts of Bratislava, the history expositions, the ceremonial staircase, the Treasury, the Crown Tower and the African art display in the Northern Ramparts.
The Marie Antoinette exhibition in the Knight’s Hall on its own. Does not include the Museum of History expositions.

Reduced tickets apply to visitors aged 6 and over and to students holding ISIC or Euro 26 — bring the card, it is checked at the entrance. Children under 6, visitors aged 70 and over, and ZŤP holders with a companion enter free and do not need a ticket from us. Prices shown include our €6 per-ticket booking service fee.

After dark
The castle is a short, steep walk up from the old town — 15–25 minutes depending on your route and pace. The gentler way is along Zámocká street to the Vienna Gate; the shorter, steeper way is up the Zámocké schody from beside St Martin’s Cathedral. If you would rather not climb, trolleybuses 44 and 47 run from Hodžovo námestie to the Hrad stop, about 120 m from the gate.
Coming from Vienna, the train to Bratislava hlavná stanica takes under an hour, and trolleybus 44 runs from that station straight to the Hrad stop with no change. Driving, use the underground HRAD garage off Palisády — there is essentially no surface parking, and museum visitors get half-price parking for up to three hours if you show your parking card at the ticket desk.
Access & comfort
Because the building was reconstructed in the 20th century, the museum is far more accessible than most castles — the Slovak National Museum describes it as wheelchair-friendly, and there is step-free access into the expositions. The approach up the hill is the harder part: the Zámocké schody stairway is not usable with a wheelchair or a pushchair, so come by trolleybus 44 or 47 to the Hrad stop, or drive to the garage.
The Crown Tower and the Treasury are reached by historic staircases and are reported not to be step-free. Visitors with a disability card enter free with one companion and park free in the garage. If you have specific access needs, contact us before booking — we will call the museum and confirm the current situation for you rather than guess.
