The castle hill runs on three different clocks, and almost every frustrated review comes from someone who only knew about one of them.

Closed Tuesdays — not Mondays
This is the important one. Most museums in this part of Europe close on Monday; the Slovak National Museum closes this one on Tuesday. Visitors who half-remember the convention turn up on Tuesday, find the doors shut, and write an angry review about it.
The grounds are still open on a Tuesday, so the walk up and the view are not wasted — but you will not get inside.
The garden closes earlier than you think
The Baroque garden is seasonal, and in midwinter it shuts at 16:00 — well before the museum does. Roughly:
- January, February, November, December — 09:00 to 16:00
- March, October — 09:00 to 17:00
- April, September — 09:00 to 18:00
- May, August — 09:00 to 20:00
- June, July — 09:00 to 21:00
The garden was reconstructed and reopened in 2016 on the original foundations, laid out over four terraces, and it is consistently one of the quieter and more pleasant corners of the hill. Worth timing your visit so it is still open.
Best time to go
Early morning is the reliable answer. The Vienna day-trip coaches arrive around midday, so 10:00 to 11:00 is noticeably calmer. For photographs, late afternoon puts the sun behind the old town and lights the white walls; the hour before sunset on the terrace is the best view of the day.
Check before you travel
Occasional closures do happen — state visits are received at the castle, and the parliament sits on the same hill. They are not always well announced. If you are making a special journey, glance at snm.sk the day before.
