Bratislava has two castles and visitors regularly assume they are variations on the same thing. They are not. They are close to opposites, and which one you will prefer is genuinely predictable.
The short answer
- Want a museum, a view over the city, and somewhere warm and dry? Bratislava Castle.
- Want an authentic ruin on a dramatic cliff, and do not mind the weather? Devín.
- Have a full day and decent shoes? Do both — they are about 20 minutes apart by bus.
Bratislava Castle
On the hill above the old town, a ten-minute walk from St Martin’s Cathedral. A rebuilt 18th-century palace holding the Slovak National Museum’s history collections. Open Wed–Mon, 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays. Grounds free and open daily.
Strengths: easy to reach, indoors, the Treasury and Crown Tower are genuinely good, and the terrace view over the Danube is the best in the city.
Weakness: it is a reconstruction, and if you wanted ancient stone you will feel it.
Devín Castle
About 12 km west, where the Morava flows into the Danube, on the old Iron Curtain frontier. Napoleon’s troops blew it up in 1809 and — unlike Bratislava Castle — it was never rebuilt. Take bus 29 from Most SNP, roughly 20 minutes.
Strengths: real, unrestored ruins on a spectacular clifftop; Roman and Great Moravian archaeology; a much stronger sense of age.
Weaknesses: closed Mondays, exhibitions run in the summer season only, hours shrink to 10:00–16:00 in winter, and there is very little shelter.
Doing both in a day
Start at Bratislava Castle when it opens at 10:00 — you get the quiet hour before the Vienna coaches. Walk down the hill to Most SNP (about twelve minutes, all downhill), take bus 29 to Devín, and give yourself two hours there.
Two things will ruin this plan if you do not check them: Bratislava Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Devín is closed on Mondays. There is no single day of the week on which both are shut, but there are two days on which one of them is.
If you only have a couple of hours
Bratislava Castle, without hesitation. It is walkable from the centre, it works in any weather, and the walk down through the old town afterwards is one of the nicest things in the city.
