Bratislava Castle is the one landmark everybody photographs and quite a few people never go inside. Part of that is confusion about what you are actually buying. Here is the whole thing, plainly.
What a standard ticket covers
The castle houses the Museum of History of the Slovak National Museum (SNM). The standard ticket gets you the full castle route:
- Celts from Bratislava — the Iron Age settlement found under the hill, including the coins its mint struck
- The building’s own history, and the Theresian honorary staircase
- The Northern State Rooms
- The Treasury and the Crown Tower
- The African art display in the Northern Ramparts
What it does not cover is the Marie Antoinette exhibition in the Knight’s Hall. That is ticketed separately, or together with the above on a combined ticket.
What it costs
The official museum prices are €14 adult and €7 reduced for the castle route, €10 and €5 for Marie Antoinette, and €22 and €12 for the two combined. Children under 6, visitors aged 70 and over, and holders of a disability card with one companion go in free — they do not need a ticket from anyone.

We are worth using if you want the booking handled in English and the ticket in your inbox; if you speak Slovak and have time, buying direct works perfectly well and we would rather say so than hide it.
The two rules that catch people out
The museum is closed every Tuesday. Not Monday — Tuesday. This is the single most common wasted trip up the hill, because most European museums close on Mondays and people assume. The castle grounds and gardens stay open on Tuesdays; only the museum inside is shut.
Tickets are released about a month ahead. The museum does not publish dates further out, so nobody — us included — can sell you a ticket for a date three months away. If you are planning further ahead than that, come back nearer the time.
There is no entry time
Bratislava Castle does not run timed entry. Your ticket is valid for a whole date, any time between 10:00 and 18:00, with the last admission at 17:00. There is no tour to catch and no slot to miss. Arrive when it suits you.
Do you even need a ticket?
Honestly — maybe not. The castle grounds, the terraces with the view over the Danube, and the Baroque garden are all free and open far longer than the museum (08:00–22:00 for the grounds). A great many visitors walk up, enjoy the view, wander the garden and leave perfectly happy. The ticket is for the collections inside. Buy it if you want the museum; skip it if you came for the view.
